Hunter Gatherer

NINE up and coming artists have raided the biggest archive in Leeds to create the Hunter Gatherer exhibition at the Project Space Leeds gallery.

They created new works after being let loose in the Artemis collection - an amazing portfolio of more than 10,000 objects relating to world cultures, fine and applied art, science, natural history, textiles and costume, social history, childhood and much, much more.

Amelia Crouch, Lubaina Himid, Susan Walsh, Dinu Li, Rhiannon Silver, Bryndís Snæbjörnsdóttir, Mark Wilson, Lisa Stansbie and Nathan Walker were given exclusive access to the archive in Holbeck, which forms an art loan service for Education Leeds..

The title of the new show refers to a term used by anthropologists to describe the way in which human beings collected food before the advent of agriculture. The artists say it reflects the processes they have employed to sift through the vast Artemis collection.

The eclectic range of works include sculpture, installation, film, prints and drawing which form part static exhibition and part on-going project within the space.
