WEST Yorkshire Playhouse and Theater an der Parkaue have commissioned British playwright Aisha Khan to write a new play directed by German director Lajos Talamonti, called No Man’s Land.
The play, performed by two British and two German actors, has already premiered in Germany and comes to the Playhouse from 29 April -7 May, to mark the culmination of the young peoples’ cultural exchange project, Borderlines.
This international collaboration has helped young people from Leeds and Berlin visit each city, create new art and explore ideas of what it is to cross different kinds of borders.
Caught vandalising a garden, 17-year-old Kitten is sent by his youth offending officer Carole to carry out tasks at the home of Viktor, a 70-year-old pensioner living in Armley. He is consumed with memories of his past; meanwhile Kitten is distracted from his tasks when he hears a noise coming from Viktor’s shed and discovers 15-year-old runaway Houdini inside.
As Houdini strives to remain hidden, Kitten begins to learn about Viktor and his fondness for breaking rules and leaving East Berlin. A tender and imaginative drama unfolds, in which boundaries are crossed, divides are conquered and unlikely friendships are formed.
Lajos Talamonti is a director, author and performer and the founder of performance platform Urban Lies which has been operating in Berlin since 1999. He regularly tours Europe and has performed with Forced Entertainment in the UK.
British playwright Aisha Khan is an emerging talent whose writing credits include Beep, co-written with Mark Catley, and radio dramas Road Trip, Driftwood Heart, Paper Flowers (BBC Radio 4) and Silver Street (BBC Asian Network). The cast includes Stefan Faupel, Paul Holowaty, Amy McAllister and Danielle Schneider.
Tickets for No Man’s Land can be reserved by calling West Yorkshire Playhouse Box Office on 0113 213 7700 or by visiting www.wyp.org.uk
